Mise-en-scene: Blog task

  Mise-en-scene: Blog task

Watch the opening of television drama ‘Stranger Things’, a science fiction story set in the 1980s when four friends get wrapped up in a dangerous alternate universe.

Create a new blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things analysis'.

1) Choose THREE aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting and setting) and write a short paragraph for each about the denotation and connotation and what is communicated to the audience.

For example:

Lighting: The lighting was really bright and flashing while the boy was looking up at the lightbulb. This suggests that a significant event of some kind occurs when the flash occurs; for instance, the boy vanished when the light flashed. This builds tension and leaves the viewer wondering what will happen next. It provides viewers something enjoyable to anticipate from the series and encourages them to see it through again.

Setting: The man was initially at an energy laboratory. Given that guy appeared to be a scientist and was dressed in a lab coat, it is possible that he was creating anything involving energy. Additionally, it implies that the device he built—which went horribly wrong—was produced and remained close to the location where the youngster vanished and where he also saw the dark figure. Furthermore, the term "energy" is used to characterise both the lab and the black figure (the erroneous belief) since the latter appeared to be highly vivacious and moved quickly, akin to energy.

Actor location, gesture, and expression: The performers' faces conveyed confusion, worry, and fear. This is how the boy's expression changed from normal to bewildered and terrified as soon as he entered the forbidden area and saw the dark figure. Additionally, he was terrified and fled quickly as soon as he spotted the shadow. His quick movements suggest that he is trying to flee from whatever is pursuing him and that he is in danger.
